Like many of you for the next few weeks, I’ll be working home...alongside my kids. It’s day three of the experience and I’m not going to lie, I’m a little worried! On day one I tapped into my piece de resistance, Frozen 2 and it seems wherever I find a quiet corner to set up my work camp, my 6 and 8-year-old entourage follows. Don’t get me wrong, it’s lovely to have the house full of energy and giggles but the constant “What you doin’ now Mama?” is clearly an attempt to join in and has left me thinking that all those ‘be inclusive’ conversations are starting to backfire.
To my surprise, however, I witnessed their pure delighted when I fired up Canva and it dawned on me that this is something they could do. Let’s face it we’re in it for the long haul and those school apps are only going to satisfy their digital appetite for so long. I might not be the vet dr chef that my 6-year-old is aspiring to be or the policewoman gymnast my 8-year-old is aiming for, (they’re going to be very busy adults), but for the next few weeks I have the opportunity to spark their interest in the world of digital advertising, well the cool parts anyway, and who knows, just maybe one of them will actually understand what it is we do and appreciate those eye-catching visuals and gripping content we’re so famous for :)
So here’s my list of top 5 kid-friendly, adult-supervised, digital activities:
1. Basic intro to digital design by creating an advert or poster on Canva
2. Capture the moment and create an image library. Modify images in Photoshop or ThingLink
3. Create a short slideshow video with music, using Imovie/Animoto
4. Encourage content creation with some good storytelling. Start your own blog on WordPress or Wix or sign up to Storybird to boost writing skills
5. Create your own meme or GIF using imgflip
Go forth young Digiteers, we can’t wait to see what you produce!
